Take five of the following thesis statements (all of which were created by UWF Composition students) and develop at least three topic sentences that will support each of your choices. Use diagramming to work through your initial ideas on a separate peice of paper and draw a tree diagram for your final answer.
- Women should serve in military combat because women are the equals of men.
- Governmental censorship of art is justified when the artist's ideas are affecting others.
- Abortions should not be provided by college health clinics
- Smoking should be banned from public buildings.
- A public education is more culturally diverse than a private education.
- The portrayal of minorities on TV and in film degrades minorities and fosters stereotyping.
- The folly of cheating in college is that the rewards reaped are false and unfulfilling, while the punsihents are severe and horribly memorable.
Exercise #2
Take any one of the thesis statements that you developed when completing Exercise #2 in Chapter Three and develop at least three solid topic sentences for it using a simple diagram and a tree diagram.
