Additional Notes for Chapters 6 and 9 - Conceptual Modeling and Database Design

As I have mentioned in class, chapters 6 and 9 are closely related to each other. I will include notes, examples, Visual Basic code examples, and Access database examples as I develop them and reference them in class lectures. Watch this page for new information from time to time.

Here is a link to a discussion of functional dependency and an example of data file normalization. I provide this information as another example that you can reference. The examples in the text, chapter 9, are IMHO excellent! The document also has links to several web sites with excellent examples of the logical normalization process.
This link provides a discussion of foreign keys and the permitted operations when working with data files in a relational database environment. Actually, these rules apply regardless of the environment in which a system is developed.
