During the summer of 2003 two of our past teachers returned to the project and brought with them 6 high school students to join in the summer research projects. In addition five new teachers were invited to participate in the project. A tropical storm passing through the area an several other small storms provided the North Florida Panhandle with plenty of rain during the months of June and July and the teachers participating in the project had multiple opportunities to collect at the 4 H site, the Tate Farm site and the Catfish Pond. But before data collection began the teachers prepared for locating sample sites during a week long GPS workshop. Each teacher participating in the research experience was provided with a hand held GPS. With the help of Krystal Flanders, a graduate student in the Environmental Science department, the teachers prepared to not only locate sites for record keeping but to use the GPS for locating already mapped sites. During one activity the teachers searched the UWF campus for a Geocache.
Following their adventure on and near the campus nature trails, the teachers returned to the computer laboratory where they were able to work with GIS software and learn how to manage data collected. During the school year teachers will be locating sites along the water shed in their regions from which they or their students will be retrieving water samples that will be tested. These test sites will eventually be recorded on this website along with the data the students collect. Students as well as teachers also worked in the laboratory testing samples of water from Project Sites for various nutrients.
