The Rape Awareness Project is a continuing activity of the Applied Anthropology Class. Spring 2002 was the third year of our project. Collaborating with the Rape Crisis Center of Baptist Health Care, the Social Work Club, The UWF Women's Studies Program, and community participants, we organized a day to share information, learn about self-defense, and build community contacts. The day culminated with the second TAKE BACK THE NIGHT candlelight vigil on the Library Green.
Create Awareness, Create Change
We contributed to campus-wide activities centered on the task of informing more men on campus about rape prevention. The class was listed in the Women's Studies offerings for the Spring term. Our project built continuity as students from the class moved into internships supporting our campus and community needs. We also aided in community and campus networking on the issue of sexual harassment and violence. The overall activity was very successful, including campus representatives, County Commissioner Tom Banjanin, clergy and participants from the Baptist Collegiate Ministries, and staff of the Rape Crisis Center. Thanks to individual contributions and a grant for the activity, Rape Awareness T-shirts were distributed to students, about 400 people were provided information, and about 100 people participated in the colloquy and vigil.
And, of course, we'll be back next year.
Applied Anthropology is open to any
student, regardless of prior anthropology background. As a senior-level
course, the class may not be appropriate for freshman students. However,
some sophomores who are beginning to take major courses may be interested
in the class. If you have questions, call Terry Prewitt at 474-2186.
Once again, our goal for the 2001-2002 school year was to get more men
involved in rape prevention activities. We hope to continue to work
closely with the Office of Student Affairs, Campus Organizations, the Campus
Alcohol and Drug Information Center, and the Counseling Center to link
activities and programs. Watch our web pages for more information.
