Spring 2000 Applied Anthropology Class

During the Spring 2000 term, the Applied Anthropology class organized several campus events on the topics of rape awareness and prevention.  Early in the term, we conducted a three-hour colloquy which presented campus and community information to students and the public.  Over the semester, the class pursued topics relating to rape prevention.  We attempted to raise awareness through letters to the student newspaper, posters, fliers, and participation in other related campus events.  The class concluded with a two-day conference which took its theme from the reader Transforming A Rape Culture edited by  Emilie Buchwald,  Martha Roth, and Pamela Fletcher (Milkweed Editions, 1993).  The conference drew together local professionals who deal with victims and perpetrators of sexual violence on a daily basis.   Many of the participants formed connections for cooperative effort in their work, and are looking forward to future community programs in which they can collaborate again. The keynote speaker, Marty Langelan of the Washington D.C. Rape Crisis Center, inspired many of the students and participants to develop additional programs over the coming year.   We want to thank Marty for her work with us by providing a strong action program for 2001.
