Take Back the Night -- 2003

Plans for the Take Back the Night observance are underway as part of the Culture, Gender, and Aggression class.  In collaboration with the Women's Studies Program, the UWF Women's Studies Collective, the Rape Crisis Center, the Riviera Fitness Center for Women, the Toas Kung Fu Academy, PJC, and several other university and community groups, a series of activities and meetings will highlight women's issues, including sexual violence and rape awareness activities at our April 16 event.   [History of UWF Take Back the Night]

The current working list of April activities includes:

April 2.  Rape Awareness Action at PJC sponsored by the Lakeview Rape Crisis Center.

April 3.  Rape Awareness tables at the UWF Health Fair, University Commons.

April 16.  Take Back the Night activities on the UWF Library Green:
 
beginning 4:00 Gathering and Banner Signing
4:30 Self-Defense/Escape Demonstration by Master Safakhoo and students 
of the Toas Kung Fu Academy, Pensacola --  The demonstration is sponsored
by the Riviera Fitness Center for Women
6:15 Colloquy offered by Rosalind Fisher, Mary Lou Ruud, Mary Ann Fabbro, and representatives from Gay-Straight Alliance, Green Earth Fellowship, Favor House, and Escambia/Santa Rosa Rape Crisis Center.  This will be followed with a musical performance by Dorothy Carter.  Dorothy has performed widely in the United States and Europe, working with diverse traditional and popular musicians.  Her most recent and current CD project is Lonesome Dove, and she also supports the Mediaeval Baebes on albums and in live performances through vocal styling and instrumental arrangements on dulcimer, zither, piano, hurdy-gurdy, and recorder.
Dusk Candle-light Vigil 
Drum and Chant Circle facilitated by the Sisters of Song, a group under the direction of Deborah Merwin dedicated to women's issues and community building among women of diverse backgrounds.  

April 17.  Dorothy Carter will discuss her work and musically interact with members of the Culture, Gender, & Aggression class as part of the regular Thursday evening class session.  Interested participants from outside the class are welcome.  The session will be in Building 11, Room 121, beginning at 5:30 pm.

April 18.  2nd Women's Studies Conference --
    UWF Conference Center Room A  9:00am-5:00 pm.
