CALL FOR PAPERS AND REGISTRATION INFORMATION

THE SOUTHERN ANTHROPOLOGICAL SOCIETY

41st Annual Meeting (2006) -- February 2–5, 2006

Pensacola Beach, Florida

We are pleased to invite your participation at the 41st Annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society.  The keynote theme for the conference is “Culture and Crisis: Recovery and Continuity When Things Fall Apart.” The theme relates, of course, to the extreme challenges that have impacted the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida in 2004 and 2005.  We believe practical and theoretical perspectives anthropology has to offer our culture and communities are substantial, and that this meeting can also provide means for people in our region to address concerns and issues through our scholarly work.  Of course, we also encourage papers and sessions on any topic relating to research, application, or teaching in anthropology and allied scholarly pursuits. Organized panels are welcome. Volunteered papers will also be incorporated into thematic sessions, with the conference organizers providing a session abstract linking the grouped papers.

Using the general guidelines listed below, please submit any of the following by JANUARY 15, 2006:  organized sessions, individual 20-minute paper presentations, poster presentations, and round-table discussions (include organized panels of three or four discussants).  SCHEDULED PAPERS APPEAR HERE.  ABSTRACTS FOR PAPERS SCHEDULED FOR THE PROGRAM APPEAR HERE.  ADDRESS QUERIES ON SUBMISSIONS NOT APPEARING IN THE ABSTRACT FILE OR MEETING SCHEDULE TO tprewitt@uwf.edu or 850-324-1548.

  1. For individual papers or poster presentations, provide the name and affiliation of the primary presenter and include names and affiliations of all co-authors (Note: all authors who attend the meeting must register for the meeting.), and an abstract of no more than 150 words.
  2. For panel proposals, the name and affiliation of the organizer(s) and provide a title and 150-word abstract for the panel suitable for inclusion in the program.
  3. For panel proposals, in addition, list all names, affiliations, and paper titles as you want them to appear in the program and suggest an order of presentations if you have a preference (otherwise presenters will be arranged alphabetically) NOTE: Individual authors on organized panels may submit separate paper abstracts and registration materials..
  4. Plan for 20 minute paper presentations + 10 minutes discussion time in panel time blocks of 90-minutes.  In general, papers will be listed in the program with set start times, holding all discussion time to the end of the session.  If organizers want discussion time after each paper, please request that arrangement.  Variations from the 90 minute panel time blocks may result in organized sessions being placed in late afternoon panel assignments.  Also, each discussant will be allotted 20 minutes of reaction time + 10 minutes of response from presenters (i.e., the same amount of time as regular presenters); if you arrange for formal discussants, they will be scheduled in the same way as presenters.
  5. For each individual to be listed in the program, provide mail contact, email address, and telephone numbers.
  6. Please coordinate with us by email on all submissions.  Email attachments will work best when saved in a RICH TEXT FORMAT.  Your cover information should indicate the word processing system and version of any attached material.
  7. We will need a statement of any audio-visual needs.  We should be able to accommodate most requests, as long as you ask early.  Requests for AV support made at the meeting will be subject to availability at that time.
  8. A check made payable to Southern Anthropological Society to cover conference registration fees, dues, and any special subscription offers  for each presenter should be sent to:

Hotel Information:  Southern Anthropological Society will hold its 2006 annual meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn , Pensacola Beach, Florida, this coming February.  Local arrangements, including registration and program development, are being handled by Terry Prewitt and Robert Philen of the University of West Florida. The hotel provides excellent meeting space and dining facilities that should enable a positive working environment for sharing research and conduct of society business.

The room block will be held until January 2, 2006, so we encourage everyone to make their room reservations early by telephoning the hotel at 1-866-916-2999. You should identify our  Southern Anthropological Society group and provide the Group Code “SAS” in order to receive the group rates, which are:

$89 for “Soundside” room (facing away from the Gulf toward Pensacola Beach sound)

            $109 for Gulf Front rooms

Note: Reservation changes, based on availability, will be accepted without penalty until 4:00 P.M three days prior to arrival.

As you are perhaps aware, most of the Pensacola hotels were closed by damage from hurricane Ivan until early this year, and most of the beach hotels not open again until next year.  The Hilton suffered only minor exterior damage from Hurricane Ivan and no damage from subsequent storms.  The core beach area only reopened in March 2005, but most of our beaches are still not open to the public. We have selected a hotel that is secure and very comfortable, offers airport shuttle access, diverse dining opportunities close at hand, and situated in the relatively “recovered” part of Pensacola Beach.

We will post information on the meeting, transportation, and travel conditions in the region at:
