2007
Annual Meeting Call for Papers
The
2007 Annual Meeting of the Semiotic Society of America will be held in New
Orleans from noon on Thursday, October 4 through noon on Sunday, October 7. The meeting will be held at
the Sheraton Hotel, located on the edge of the French quarter. Please consult
the special website for SSA 2007 conference reservations: http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/ssa1
. [ssa followed by the number 1]
The
theme for the 2007 conference is “Semiotics and Survival.” Our plenary luncheon
speaker will be Dr. James Liszka, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alaska
Anchorage, speaking on “The Value of Signs,” including
reference to New Orleans
after Katrina. We encourage papers that address semiotics as a diverse but
unified field of study and that consider its future prospects within the
academy. Following tradition, our theme is non-exclusive and, indeed, we
welcome submissions addressing any topic within our diverse discipline, whether
theoretical or applied. Please submit an abstract
of 100 to 350 words carefully composed to give a clear sense of your
proposal. Please also include a short list (3-7) of keywords for our program index and be sure to state specifically
any AV requirements. Papers are
given 30-minute slots, typically 20
minutes for presentation, followed by 10 minutes for questions and
discussion. Abstracts should be sent to the Chair of the Program Committee,
Prof. Robert Hatten, at rohatten@indiana.edu. Send your
abstracts both in the body of your email and in an attachment (do not use
special fonts or graphics). The deadline for submission is 31 May, 2007. The program committee welcomes proposals for symposia
or special sessions; please include a session abstract with individual paper
abstracts.
Participants
must be paid up members of the Society and must register for the 2007 Annual
Meeting. Annual SSA dues are $50 for
regular membership or $25 for student membership and may be paid online at www.pdcnet.org/member-ssa.html.
(International participants and participants in special symposia may request a
waiver of membership dues.) The meeting registration
fee is $80 or $40 for students. Optional fees include $20 for the Plenary
Luncheon on Friday and $35 for the Banquet and Presidential Address on Saturday
evening. Meeting registration and banquet fees should be sent in advance to Terry J. Prewitt, Department of
Anthropology, University of West
Florida, 11000
University Parkway, Pensacola FL 32514. For information about the
