The Importance of Being Earnest
By Oscar Wilde
One of Oscar Wilde’s most popular works, The Importance of Being Ernest, takes a humorous look at the social moors and traditions of Victorian England. The plot follows Algernon Moncrieff and Ernest Worthing, who lead lives that do not quite fit the mold of typical Victorian gentlemen. Bored with the mundane, they both lead double lives which lead to multiple love interests. Fraught with comedic confusion and wrought with pretentious irony, the characters learn a valuable lesson about when and where to take life seriously and when to throw caution to the wind and take chances. Indeed, each character ultimately learns the importance of being earnest when facing the very strict and stuffy traditions of society.

The Laramie Project
By Moises Kaufman & the Members of Tectonic Theater Project
In 1998, members of the Tectonic Theatre Company spent time in Laramie, WY, following the murder of Matthew Shepard. Part play, part “documentary theatre”, The Laramie Project is a reenactment of the series of interviews conducted during their visit. The actors portray over sixty different characters based on the people of Laramie that had affiliation with or were affected by the tragedy. Balancing the different beliefs and perspectives of the community members and the portrayal of the media to show how a tragedy can at once be a personal event while at the same time causing a turmoil that can rock a city and nation. An eye-opening and brilliantly written play, The Laramie Project set in motion an inquisitive and necessary dialogue about the role of the media, the issue of homosexuality in America, and the effectiveness of the judicial system.
