The SSE and SWE host the 1st annual STEMposium for Women

The University of West Florida (UWF) School of Science and Engineering (SSE) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) professional and student sections hosted the first-ever Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Symposium for Women on Friday, April 8, 2011. More than 50 participants attended a variety of sessions designed to encourage networking and mentoring opportunities between high school, collegiate students and working professionals. Featured speakers included Christine Buziak, P.E., resident engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers at Eglin Air Force Base, and JoAnn Morgan, the first female engineer to serve as senior executive at Kennedy Space Center for NASA.
Over lunch, special recognition was provided to JoAnn Morgan, Gulf Power, E-Week planning committee, Florida Society of Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers for their gifts in establishing the Future Women Engineers Scholarship Endowment. Elizabeth Cherry, a senior Electrical Engineering student with a 3.84 GPA was presented with the first scholarship award. All participants were treated to a building tour which included demonstrations of the 3-D holodeck, laser and unmanned systems labs.
The event was sponsored by the UWF School of Science and Engineering, the Society of Women Engineers, the UWF President’s Division and UWF University Advancement. This event was partially supported through a SWE Program Development Grant funded by ExxonMobil. For additional information, please contact Laura White at lwhite@uwf.edu.
Lorrie Collier Berry, symposium attendee, is a graduate of UWF and a Recruiter for CED Technical Services. Read Lorrie's article about the symposium here: http://ced.com/CED-News-Blog/April-2011/Women-in-Science,-Technology,-Engineering-and-Math.aspx
SSE Undergraduate Students Score First Place at the AITP National Java Programming Contest
On the weekend of March 25, Computer Science Senior Stefan Lee and Electrical Engineering Junior Madison Fortenberry embarked on a road trip for the AITP National Collegiate Conference in Orlando, FL. The conference was attended by 65 colleges and universities across the nation. Of the 22 teams competing in the Java Programming Competition, Madison and Stefan won FIRST place including a large trophy, plaques and monetary awards.
Both Stefan and Madison have quite impressive academic records and extracurricular service. While also maintaining a 3.97 GPA in the rigorous Computer Science program, Stefan serves as the AITP Chapter President and the SSE Tour Ensign. He will be awarded on April 1st with the distinction of Outstanding Undergraduate Student of the Year in Computer Science. Stefan will begin the Ph.D program in Computer Science at Indiana University where he was accepted with full support.
In the Fall of 2010, Madison Fortenberry, a UWF PACE Scholar and Top 5 scholarship recipient, enrolled at UWF as a Junior in the Electrical Engineering program immediately following his high school graduation. In 2008, he received recognition from the Florida House of Representatives for the full-size, operational robot he designed and built to deliver messages from the Pace High School guidance office to teachers. For over three years, Madison has held a position as a student assistant at the Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition. Naturally, Madison is also currently a team member on the SSE Tour Robot project.
The School of Science and Engineering is proud to have these two extraordinary students as part of our community!! Be sure to check out the SSE Trophy Case to see their award.
Successful 21st century science, technology, engineering and math programs have to focus attention on learning environments, in which all students have ample opportunity for practicing science and sharing their discoveries.
In response to the escalating need for graduates who can meet rapidly changing industry demands in the scientific fields critical to building and maintaining a strong regional and national economy, the University Of West Florida has established a School of Science and Engineering.
The school hosts programs including Computer Science, computer information science, computer and electrical engineering, computer engineering, mathematics and statistics, physics and software engineering. These programs will come together in our new four-story, showcase building, designed to fuel the imagination.
Among many of the building's features we can find a prototype robot fabrication and testing laboratories, a 3-D virtual reality simulator and a glass walled atrium, that will put science on display.
Don't miss your chance to see the webcam view of the new SSE building to watch us grow and also try the puzzle to build it yourself!
