Sukumar Kamalasadan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering and Computer Technology at the University of West Florida.
He received his B.Tech. degree in Electrical and Electronics engineering (1991) from the University of Calicut, India, M.Eng in Electrical Power Systems Management (1999) from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (2004) from The University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio.
Prior to joining UWF, Dr.Kamalasadan has held industrial positions for six years and has teaching and research experience for over three years. In the industry, he worked as a design and development engineer, executing projects for captive power plants/utilities before becoming an Assistant Manager for a refinery facility.
As a researcher, initially he was involved in developing an approach on AI based voltage stability monitoring, control and assessment. Subsequently, he continued to develop intelligent control algorithms and formalized a new concept of supervisory loop based controller. Currently, he is working on a novel concept of intelligent agent, supervisory loop based
adaptive controller for complex and Multimodal Dynamic systems control.
His teaching activities are courses related to Computational Intelligence, Electric Machines, Power, Control Systems and Micro Controllers.
His research interests are Intelligent and Autonomous Control, AI applications to control of dynamic systems, Power Systems dynamics and Stability and Real-time Embedded Systems Applications.
Some of his past research projects includes Neural Network Approach to Voltage Stability Assessment and Improvement, Parallel Adaptive Controller for Permanent Magnet Position Tracking and C505C Microcontroller application to DC Motor Control.
Dr. Kamalasadan has won several awards and scholarships including a prestegious NSF FACULTY EARLY CAREER AWARD.
He is listed in who's who in the workd, Who's who in America and who's who in science and engineering. He is also the recipient of Outstanding Teaching Award from the Graduate Student Association (2001- 2002) and from the College of Engineering (2002-2003) at the University of Toledo. Recently, he has also won travel awards (2004-05, 2005-06 & 2006-07) and Summer research award for his research activities at the University of West Florida.
