African-Americans with Diabetes Invited to Join Research Study - Two major health issues in the African-American community are diabetes (sugar) and sickle cell disease. Researchers in the School of Allied Health and Life Sciences, Kristina Behan and Justice Mbizo, are investigating whether or not sickle cell trait causes erroneous results for diabetes testing. Sixty volunteers with diabetes are needed to complete a four month study. Thirty people with sickle cell trait and 30 people without the trait are needed. Employees and/or their family members are encouraged to enroll if they are African-American, 50 or older, have diabetes but do not take insulin shots to regulate it and are willing to perform blood sugar testing at home. All participants will be tested for the presence of the sickle cell gene. Glucose meters and strips will be provided for testing at home during the study. To volunteer, contact Behan at Ext. 3060 or Ext. 2882 or e-mail kbehan@uwf.edu.
