Course Overview:

Please don't let the title of this course intimidate you. As the quote above indicates, the core motivation behind this course is to create awareness and train students in the use of computer applications to improve communication, patient safety, and quality of care in public health arenas. In this introductory course, lectures have been developed with feedback from regional public health officials, physicians, computer scientists, and local health care business leaders. Our emphasis is on HANDS-ON coverage of basic computer skills, Internet literature retrievals, fundamentals of data collection, statistical analysis, interpretation, and reporting results, mobile technologies/PDAs, on-line public health resources, and more.

Unlike courses at other universities, our approach emphasizes more than just the technological aspects of computer applications. You will apply your skills and develop solutions that involve interdisciplinary teams. In general, upon completion of this course, a student will acquire the skills to be able to serve as a liaison to public health officials, physicians, administrators, and other health care professionals in the use of current and emerging computer applications in public health. In addition, this course meets the following programmatic goals for the MPH degree and Certificate in Medical Informatics programs:
