
| Electronic Health Records (EHRs) have been center stage since President Bush initiated the strategy for universal EHRs by Executive Order in 2004. In 2009 the HITECH Act included reimbursement by Medicare and Medicaid for meaningful use of certified EHRs by eligible physicians. This is one of the major reasons this topic has become so important in the last two years. Our course, HSA 4193/5198 Electronic Clinical Record Systems explores the use and evaluation of commercially available electronic medical record systems. The course is based on the 2011 second edition of Electronic Health Records by R. Gartee. Students have the opportunity to use EHR software to perform standard EHR functions such as ordering a test, using one of 70 exercises included in the textbook. We also expose students to a very popular web based EHR known as Practice Fusion.
Again, students will perform multiple exercises to get accustomed to electronic patient charts. The following are the topics covered in the book chapters and discussed by the instructors:
