Students who are employed with Recreation and Sports Services will learn the value of service as demonstrated by completing 20 hours of community service each semester. We expect 75% of student employees to meet these criteria.
This first measure of service learning stems from simple curiosity of how much student employees are volunteering. Current student employees are labelled as part of the "net generation", which is defined among other things as narcissistic and egotistical (see our "Generation Me" staff training powerpoint presentation). We believe volunteerism has personal benefit as well as assists with job placement, so would like to have a better idea of what level of volunteerism is happening with our students.
Student employees are asked to log their community service hours through the university's volunteerism department website, JasonQuest. Staff will then receive a report from JasonQuest listing students' community sevice hours.
Date is collected at the end of each semester.
Whatever level of service students are in fact contributing, we're exploring ways to encourage and educate without "volunteering volunteers". To help with this we are creating a volunteer committee which focuses on volunteer opportunities hosted by people from the recreation and sports services department.
