Students who are employed with Recreation and Sports Services will learn pertinent work skills as demonstrated by describing skills they have learned through their employment that will be valuable to future work. A student will be able to list 4 skills as compared to the National Association of Colleges and Employers 2007 survey of "Skills Employers are Seeking". We expect 80% of students to meet these criteria.
This measure is intended to not only assess student learning, but to specifically assess that student employees are aware of skills they have learned being vital to future work.
Student employees will be asked via an online survey to list the skills they have learned through employment with Recreation and Sports Services.
Take the Learned Through Recreation Measure.
At the end of each semester professional staff in each program area will ask students to list the skills learned through employment by taking the Learned through Recreation Measure. These lists will be compared to the top 20 survey results.
We started a leadership conference for our student leaders, during which time we discuss best practices for working in our department. We also plan to host more workshops throughout the year covering topics such as resumes, interview skills, stress and time management techniques, and professionalism.
This fall 46% of student employees could identify four skills they had learned while working for UWF RSS that are on the list.
Based on previous results, we have added several skills frequently mentioned that aren’t on the list yet considered valuable, such as “conflict resolution”, “respect”, and “responsibility”
There is still a large gap between our current outcome of 34% and our target
of 80%. To close this gap we are expanding the use of learning tools such
as discussion cards for implementation in student staff meetings throughout
the semester.
