![]() Participants wanting to belay must start by passing a belay test, which involves demonstrating all the skills necessary for climbing and belaying without direct assistance of staff. Most people who take a beginner climbing course will be able to pass a belay test, although you cannot take a belay test the same day you take a beginner climbing course. Those with prior climbing experience may elect to take a belay tests and skip the course. |
A two-hour course designed to teach the safety skills needed for
top-rope climbing. Upon completion of this course most participants
will be able to properly put on a harness, tie into the rope, and belay
a partner. Participants should bring a partner if possible, although
partners could be found in the course.
Courses are free. All necessary equipment is included. Courses are offered every day at the start of open climb, so arrive on time and ready.

Belay Card SystemWe use a three-stage progression to develop your skills from total novice to experienced belayer. Participants wear a card corresponding to their current level of experience, helping staff provide the appropriate level of supervision and instruction.

Red CardClimb Only. You have not passed a belay test. You must be belayed by a Beginner Belayer or a Certified Belayer. You can back up belay.
Yellow CardBeginner Belayer. You have successfully completed a belay test, but must still demonstrate proper belaying on five different days. You must have a belay check from staff and a back up belayer at all times.
Green CardCertified Belayer. You have passed a belay test and five successful demonstrations. You can belay without checks from staff or backup. You will still be monitored by staff, and will receive a warning and correction if needed. Repeat incidents will result in your return to beginner status. |
