Sample Student Guide

I. Lesson Description

In the past ten plus years, gangs have become a part of life in the community. To combat the growing gang related activities, this lesson will assist in helping to identify and recognize gang behavior. Major topics of the lesson include: What is a gang?; Community Gang Issues; and Family Issues.

II. Purpose of the Lesson

To empower the student with the knowledge to identify and recognize gang activity in the community and how to combat it.

III. Major Goals

Upon completion of this lesson the student will be able to identify and recognize gang related activity and behavior.

IV. Objectives

Students will obtain background information, terminology and perspectives essential to the identification and recognition of gangs.

Students will complete a gang scenario.

Students will discuss issues and topics related to gang activity.

HOW TO LEARN AT A DISTANCE

Review the agenda in advance.

More attention will be required.

Act and speak naturally.

Look at the person you are talking to.

Use names to direct questions, responses.

Participate in discussions.

Avoid coughing into the microphone.

Limit rustling of paper and books.

Pause to allow others to comment on your answer/reaction.

Allow remote speakers to finish talking before speaking.

Identify equipment problems immediately.

Limit extraneous side conversations.

Know your role as a student.

Provide feedback to others and instructor.
