Welcome to your tenth week of firefighting at Firehouse 6287.

Can you believe how much you have learned in only 10 weeks - mind boggling I am sure :-) I have already received a few of your PowerPoint lectures and they are looking good! I will send out feedback on your PowerPoints ASAP so you can make any necessary changes prior to posting them to the web (which is the next task for you to accomplish in this multi-week project).

If you noticed that there a 4 drills for this week - do not panic. The next 2 weeks we will be discussing multimedia and other related terms, as well as products of multimedia, such as computer based training and online learning environments. This topic will be ongoing for 2 weeks to give you some time to investigate the more popular software packages used to develop multimedia products for the marketplace - in education, business, and military.  Please pay close attention to due dates during the next 2 weeks through checking out the chief's inspection list on page 3.  Some items will be due on Wednesday, March 25, while other items you will have until Wednesday April 1 to complete. This week will seem like a lot of new information but remember it will be for the next 2 weeks.  I will not be posting any new information or activities next week - only reminders for the things that were assigned this week but for which you have 2 weeks.

After we complete this topic, we will begin focusing on building your web site for the final project in this course.  Some of the skills you will be learning in these next weeks will be useful when you begin building your web site so be sure to complete each one (even if you do not have to turn anything in).

Finally, it is time you start thinking about your portfolio web site and maybe start sketching things out on paper (called storyboarding) so you begin to develop an idea prior to beginning the actual building of your web site.  Your web site will be the beginning of your online portfolio. An electronic portfolio can serve many purposes. In our case it will serve the purpose of developing your web development skills as well as provide a venue for you to showcase the knowledge and skills you have learned in this course. My hope certainly is that you will continue to use this throughout your program as a way to house, organize, present, and reflect upon your learning across your degree program.  The key here is that you will be building a web site (meaning multiple web pages linked together through appropriate navigation) and not just a web page (a single web page).  Therefore, as you brainstorm and storyboard, you need to consider how you will chunk the information and how you will provide navigation for your portfolio web site.

My goals for you during the next 2 weeks' drills are to:

  • define multimedia
  • distinguish between hypertext, hypermedia, and multimedia
  • compare and contrast popular multimedia development software tools and try one out
  • use a graphics program
  • save your PowerPoint as a web page and ftp it to your space on the server
