Frequently Asked Questions
about Creating
Your Website

If you have a question during the process of creating your website, check to see if your question has already been answered on this page or in the website troubleshooting guide: 95 KB DOC file or 1 MB RTF file.

Question Answer
How do I create a navigation button in Composer?
In order to use a button (as opposed to a text link) for navigation, you first need to create the image that you want to use as the button (in another program).  Once you have created the button and inserted it on the page, the steps to make it link to something are the same as making a text link.  What you do is highlight the item (picture or text), and use the "link" button on the toolbar.  Then you enter the URL or address that you want the link to go to or the command you want the link to execute.
Can I create links to pages if the pages aren't created yet?

Yes. As long as you know what you are going to name each file and where you are going to put it, you already know what the URL would be.  For example, if you named a file "XXXX" and put it in a folder named "YYYY", and then FTPed that folder to the web server, your URL would be: http://students.uwf.edu/abcd/YYYY/XXXX (with your ArgoNet name instead of "abcd").

How many files do I have to FTP to the web server? For each page in your website, you will have to FTP at least one file. For example, if you created 3 pages, then you will need to FTP those three pages. You will also need to FTP any graphics that you used in your site. The best practice is to put all the files that you use in your site in one folder and then just FTP the folder.
Can I create one link that goes to all the pages in my site? No. A link opens a single page or executes a single command (such as a mailto link). You will need to create individual links for each item that you want to reference.
How do I know what my URL is? The process of figuring out your URL is the same process that you have used for the other assignments.  The URL will be something like: http://students.uwf.edu/abcd/yyyy/xxxx, where "abcd" is your Argonet name, "yyyy" is the name of the folder that contains the files used in your website, and "xxxx" is the file name (including extension) of your home page.
When I look at my website from my computer the graphics and links work, but when I look at it from another computer, the graphics do not display and the links do not work? Why?

Most likely the links and paths to your graphics contain references to locations on your hard-drive (such as "C:\ ", "E:\", or "My Documents"). You need to edit the link properties in Composer.

If your link location is something like this:
file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Melissa/Desktop/xxxx.htm,
your link will not work for other people who view your website. The reason that the link will not work is that the link is to a page on your hard drive and other viewers do not have access to your hard drive.
