| Week 9: October 24 | |
| Sessions This Week |
This week we are finishing up our chapters on cognition with 2 chapters that are heavy on the practical application side of things and a bit less heavy on the theory jargon (although there is still some:-) I always find these chapters a bit easier to comprehend given this and I hope you do also. Self-regulation and cooperative learning are probably 2 of the topics that I would say have a multitude of empirical research support. Modeling and reciprocal teaching have also frequently been studied in teaching reading among other subjects. Cognitive apprenticeships and situated cognition theory in their current form are somewhat new to the scene but empirical research also exists in these areas. |

1: In the Classroom
|
For our classroom session this week I have 2 lecture choices from the library that you might be interested in to further your understanding of the text chapters and expand on related topics. The first lecture is on Self-Efficacy and Self-Regulation with a dash of Motivation thrown in. The second lecture contains an overview of situated cognition theory - a close cousin to the cognitive apprenticeship ideas mentioned in Chapter 14. All or parts of these lectures supplement material in your text. Remember as you listen that you can use the real player controls to fast forward or stop the lecture whenever you want. The lectures and the lecture notes are in the training materials section this week. Please review the objectives for this week and read your text carefully with these in mind. Session Activities

Reading/Research There are a multitude of web resources available on the topics covered in this week's chapters. A few of these are listed below. Feel free to peruse at your leisure to assist in your understanding of these topics or expand on your current knowledge.
APA Tidbits The APA tidbit selected for review this week is the reference entry for
electronic media. Some of you may have had a challenge to find a format
example in the APA manual that had a good fit with the item you wanted
to include in your reference list. Session Activities None |
