2012 Nautilus Excellence AwardsNominations for the 2012 Nautilus Excellence Awards are now being accepted. Forms and nomination criteria/guidelines for the Professional Excellence Awards, Gabor Awards and Marion Viccars Award are available on the Human Resources website. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 2, 2012. The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82. All faculty and staff are invited to attend. Professional Excellence Awards One in 20 eligible employees will receive a $2,000 award. Outstanding Employee of the Year recipient will be presented with an additional $3,000 award, a designated parking space and a plaque. Employees must have worked at UWF for three years, as of March 1, 2012, to be eligible. Marion Viccars Award Employees at the director level and above and faculty administrators (including dean, associate and assistant deans, chairperson and those retiring within the academic year) are eligible to apply or be nominated for the award. Nominated employees must have worked at UWF for three years as of March 1, 2012. The award recipient receives a $2,000 (gross) cash award and a certificate of appreciation. The award recipient will be selected on the basis of outstanding job performance as well as service to the university and the community. Gabor Award for Excellence Awarded to one faculty and one staff employee. Each award recipient receives a $200 (gross) cash award and a certificate of appreciation. The honorees will be selected on the basis of outstanding job performance as well as service to the university and the community. Nominees must have worked at UWF for three years as of March 1, 2012. Congratulations to Ali Penton and Billy Pollard on Running the Disney Marathon Ali Penton and Billy Pollardstarted running and working out in 2003. At that time, they were working long hours on the Banner HR/Payroll project. They thought it was a good way to take a break from the long days of working on Banner. After the implementation, they continued to run daily and working out together. They entered local races and slowly progressed to running their first half-marathon at Pensacola Beach in 2008. Since then, they have run the Pensacola Half Marathon. They ran their first Marathon at Disney in January of 2011. They loved and enjoyed it so much, so much they decided to run the marathon in Orlando again on January 8, 2012.

The Leading Edge - The Power of Influence Ken Blanchard is an expert on management techniques. In his ground breaking book,Blanchard explaines in The One Minute Manager real power in leadership lies in influence, not power. Simply giving orders may produce results in the short-term, but good workers want more from their leaders. Managers who know how to influence others have the real key to motivating employees for the long-term. How can you become more influential? • Understand that you must earn your right to lead every single day. Stay alert for opportunities to reinforce your leadership. • Stay in contact with employees. Leaders who live in “ivory towers” can lose touch — and influence — with workers. Come out of your office and get to know staff. And, let them get to know you. This helps build trust and influence on a personal basis. • Share your beliefs with your workers. Communicate your ideas of what the future holds for your organization. Include others in your vision to help influence them to be “on board” with you. • Ask for opinions and listen to them. Make everyone in your organization feel that their views count and are valuable to you. • Make others feel you understand and connect with their needs. Meet with employees both individually and in teams. Get to know their needs as individuals and as groups. You can take a great leap in influence if employees feel you relate to — and care about — their needs. |

Horizon Health - Leaving Your Work Brain at Work Do you have trouble leaving thoughts and worries about work behind you when you come home at the end of the day? If so, you’re not alone! We’re not robots. We can’t just flip a switch to turn off our “work brains” and turn on our “home brains.” But you can work on setting up boundaries to give yourself needed down time at home. Here are some ideas: Have an end of day ritual at your job. In the last fifteen minutes of work, clean up your desk or space. Make a list of your work tasks for tomorrow. Organizing yourself like this can help close out the day. It can help create a calmer feeling as you get ready to leave work behind. You may relax more knowing you’ve made a plan for tomorrow. Begin to transition as soon as you start out for home. Travel time can be precious if you use it to wind down. If you take a train or bus, listen to your iPod™, read a book or magazine or just close your eyes and try deep, slow breathing. If you drive, put on some music or just enjoy the silence. You may have cooking and tired kids awaiting you at home. Still, you can help yourself prepare by relaxing during your transition time. Disconnect once you leave work. If you’re attached to work by cell phone, BlackBerry™ or email, turn off your device(s). If you don’t need to be reachable, power down and unplug. Know your boundaries. These steps are about setting boundaries though it’s not a foolproof plan. Some days you’ll still have to work late or bring work home because of deadlines. But keep in mind that you can make choices on many other days to keep your at-work and out-of-work lives in balance.
