APA Style Quick Reference Sheet

 

Reference Page – ALWAYS alphabetize by last name of author.  When there is more than one work written by the same author, arrange chronologically by publication date (earliest first).  Indent lines of a reference cited after the first line of the citation.  Double-space the reference page, with the title “References” centered at the top of the beginning of the list.  Include only references cited in this paper. 

 

Periodical – journals, magazines, scholarly newsletters and so on.

 

One author:

Author, A.A. (2004).  Title of article.  Title of Periodical, vol #, page numbers.

                        In text citations use (Author, 2004) or Author (2004).

 

More than one author:

Author, A.A., Author, B.B., & Author, C.C. (2004).  Title of article.  Title of Periodical, vol #, page numbers.

In text citations use Author, A, Author B, Author C etc for the first time work is discussed in text.  For all subsequent usage, use (Author et al., 2004) or Author et al. (2004).

 

Nonperiodicalbooks, reports, brochures, certain monographs, and manuals

 

One author:

Author, A.A. (2004).  Title of work. Location: Publisher.

 

More than one author:

Author, A.A., Author, B.B., & Author, C.C. (2004).  Title of work. Location: Publisher.

                        In text citations for nonperiodicals are the same as periodicals.

 

Online document

Author, A.A. (2004).  Title of work.  Retrieved month day, year, from URL.

                        In text citations use (Author, 2004).

 

Online Nonperiodical documents 

-         Stand-alone document, no author identified, no date

 

Document title. (n.d.) Retrieved month day, year, from URL.

                        In text citation, use a short title for the citation, followed by year: (Shortened Title, 2004).

Encyclopedia or dictionary

Author, A.A. (2004).  Title of encyclopedia or dictionary (Edition number, Vol number).  Location: Publisher.

                        In text citations use (Author, 2004) or Author (2004).

 

Article or chapter in an edited book

Author, A.A. (2004).  Title of article or chapter. In author of edited book, Title of edited book (pp. xx-xxx). Location: Publisher.

                        In text citations use (Author, 2004) or Author (2004).  Use author of article and not of the edited book.

 

Daily newspaper article

Author, A.A. (2004, March 1).  Title of article.  Title of Newspaper, pp. A1, A4.

                        In text citation, use a short title for the citation, followed by year: (Shortened Title, 2004).

 

Daily newspaper article (no author)

Title of article.  (2004, March 1).  Title of Newspaper, pp. A1, A4.

                        In text citation, use a short title for the citation, followed by year: (Shortened Title, 2004).

 

 

 

*General note: APA style capitalizes only the first letter of the first word of article titles book titles.  Proper nouns are capitalized in such titles.
