The University of West Florida will sponsor the Third Annual UWF Summer High School Music Camp for students between the ages of 14 and 18 from July 12-July 17, 2009 on the beautiful campus of the University of West Florida.
Interested students will experience a broad array of musical instruction including beginning and advanced theory, musicianship classes (sight-singing), class piano, ensemble playing/singing, conducting, music technology, private applied instruction, and a host of evening concerts and activities. This year’s students who have achievements and participation Escambia Youth Orchestra, Pensacola Children’s Chorus, All-State Band, Chorus, ACDA Honor Choir, Pensacola Opera/Symphony Solo and Ensemble winners, and MTA, FMT, MTNA piano winners may be eligible for scholarships!! The University of West Florida Department of Music, in partnership with the Pensacola Opera, will offer a summer music camp for high school students, ages 14 to 18, July 12 through 17 on the UWF Main Campus. The base registration fee is $250 per person, with additional fees for housing, meal plans and private lessons. The application deadline is June 26.
"UWF’s Summer High School Music Camp is an opportunity for young musicians to be instructed by our prestigious faculty and staff," said Kyle Marrero, chair of the UWF Department of Music. "Living, eating, practicing and performing on the UWF campus will provide prospective young musicians with a musical immersion experience."
Classes will include "Music Theory," "Ear Training/Sight Singing," "Class Piano," "Stage Movement," "Music History/Literature," "Music Computers/Technology" and "Beginning Conducting." Ensembles will include chorus, band, string orchestra, musical theatre/opera studio and chamber music. Private lessons in individual areas of study will also be offered. As an "All Steinway School," UWF will offer camp participants the opportunity to utilize 18 new Steinway pianos.
Merit-based scholarships for $50 and $100 are available. For scholarship consideration, applications must be received no later than June 1. Students will present a concert July 17 at 7 p.m., which is free and open to the public.

From Tallahassee take I-10 West to Pensacola. Take the Davis Hwy. exit (#13), turn right heading North on Davis Hwy. Turn left onto University Parkway. Follow University Parkway approximately 3 miles until it dead ends into campus. Turn left at campus entrance following University Parkway around a horseshoe to the right. As you reach the top of the hill, the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82 is on your right (it is the tallest building on campus). Turn right into the parking lot immediately after the CFPA. Enter the CFPA main lobby and follow the signs to the Music Wing.
All participants will receive a meal card. The card enables students to select a breakfast, lunch, & dinner in the school cafeteria. The meal card must be purchased in advance. Credit or refunds will NOT be given for unused portions of the meal card. All participants sit together in the cafeteria. Meals include three side items, one entrée and a beverage.
Twin sheet set, blanket, pillow & pillow case, towels, wash cloth, alarm clock, toiletries. Also, bring an umbrella or raincoat, shoes that can get wet, a light jacket or sweater in case air-conditioned rooms become cold. Solo literature, pencil, clothes for five days (casual clothing is recommended for the daily class schedule; students may wish to bring one or two nice outfits for evening events).
Each evening the participants will attend a concert in the music building. The concerts will feature instrumental and vocal soloists, pianists, choral, band, string orchestra and chamber ensembles. The students will also have the opportunity to perform for each other.
On Friday, July 17, 2009, the students will present a concert for family, friends, and the community. The concert begins at 7:00 PM and is FREE to the public. PLEASE NOTE: Students will be released AFTER THE FINAL ENSEMBLE HAS CONCLUDED PERFORMING. Parents should plan to stay for the ENTIRE concert!!!
A limited number of partial scholarships are available for talented students in need. Students may NOT receive BOTH General Scholarships & Performance based Scholarships.
