Dear Maritime Museum Friend, Welcome to the second issue of "Maritime Museum Currents." We hope that you enjoyed the inaugural issue that was sent in May. The purpose of this e-newsletter is to keep you abreast of the progress being made on the development of the Vice Admiral John H. Fetterman State of Florida Maritime Museum and Research Center. Please forward this to your friends and family that may be interested in joining our mailing list. For more information, to provide feedback, or to join the mailing list, please contact Lauren Smith, campaign manager at UWF, at (850) 474-3096 or e-mail lsmith2@uwf.edu A new Maritime Museum site sign was unveiled July 11 across from City Hall. Among those that attended were members of the museum committee, Community Maritime Park Associates and UWF staff. “The site sign symbolizes the progress that is being made toward the development of the Maritime Museum,” said Nancy Fetterman, museum honorary chair and UWF board of trustee member. The sign was donated by Vital Signs in Pensacola. View more photos.
CONNECTION TO MULTICULTURAL CENTER The multicultural center, one of three facilities to be owned and operated by UWF on the Community Maritime Park site, will be located adjacent to the Vice Admiral John H. Supportive of the Community Maritime Park and Maritime Museum from day one, the Pensacola Young Professionals (PYP) publically announced at their July 10 meeting that they are dedicated to raising $25,000 for the Maritime Museum. UWF President Judy Bense addressed the group and commended them for their community involvement and expressed her gratitude for their generosity. PYP member Tosh Belsinger who is heading the fundraising effort said, “I look forward to putting the energy of the PYP behind the museum in many capacities. Pensacola Young Professionals understand the importance of the Community Maritime Park for the greater Pensacola area and the role of the Maritime Museum in the Park." "The C.W. Lamar Ocean Aquarium" The Ocean Aquarium, a three-story, 135,000 gallon sea water tank, will be a focal point of the maritime museum and will serve as a true representation of the bays along the coast of Florida. It will support educational programs in the marine sciences and underwater archaeology and promote the need to preserve underwater resources. Among the most exciting features of the exhibit will be a replica 16th-century shipwreck. Visitors will be able to watch UWF nautical archaeology students lay grids over the wreck and record its dimensions. Certified divers will have opportunities to participate in tank dives.
