Choosing Your Path: Is the Management degree right for you?
All organizations need managers. A person who hires into any organization at any level will either be hired as a manager or will become a manager if he or she flourishes. Training and ability to work with and through people, to work individually or as a member of a team, and to gather and utilize information are important credentials in today's global environment. All these are included in the preparation for the management degree.
The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) degree with a major in Management is for people who aim for or hold positions of organizational leadership. Management encompasses a variety of leadership skills, and the management program builds administrative competence for careers in industrial, service, governmental, educational, and other settings. The orientation is toward effective utilization of resources and information in a complex, changing environment.
Choosing Your Path: Is the MIS degree right for you?
Business and other organizations have become more globally oriented, with the geographically-dispersed organizations tied together via technology. As a result, graduates with knowledge of how an organization fits together, coupled with expertise in utilizing technology to provide information and to help manage the organization, are in high demand.
The B.S.B.A. degree with a major in Management Information Systems (MIS) emphasizes information as a resource to be managed, planned, and controlled in much the same way as other organizational resources. This program of study presents the concepts and methods of analyzing, designing, planning, and managing simple or complex information systems within an organization. In addition, MIS emphasizes the managerial aspects of information systems by providing a base of business instruction common to the College of Business program.
Even more than other graduates from the College of Business, MIS graduates leave UWF with experience in finding data, building and using decision support systems to glean appropriate information for use in managing the organization, and utilizing presentation technology to disseminate their views and findings to all levels of management.
As might be expected, the MIS program makes heavy use of a dedicated Business Systems Design laboratory housing equipment supported by MIS alumni donations.
