Environmental Monitoring of the South Palafox Marina

Principal Investigator: Joe Eugene Lepo
Sponsoring Agency: Community Redevelopment Agency, City of Pensacola
Location of Study: South Palafox Marina, off Baylen Street, Pensacola, Florida

The City of Pensacola, Florida expanded the South Palafox Marina in 1998 to include an additional 116 boat slips. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection issued a permit for this expansion and required an assessment of the impact on environmental waters over a period of four years. The Center for Environmental Diagnostics and Bioremediation conducts periodic sampling (monthly for the first year and quarterly for subsequent years) of four sites: 1) a background site, 100 meters from the entrance; 2) entrance; 3) mid-basin; and 4) northeast corner. Samples are taken at surface, mid-depth and bottom and analyzed for nutrients, lead, oil and grease, detergents, and fecal bacteria.
