The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET)
Since 1987, the Japanese government has hired over 50,000 young people from around the world to live and work in Japan with the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET). The Program aims at promoting grass-roots international exchange between Japan and other nations by providing opportunities to work in Japan. You must be a U.S. citizen and hold a Bachelor's degree to be eligible to apply. More information about the JET Program can be found online at http://www.jetprogramme.org
Summer Semester in Japan Program
The purpose of the Summer Semester in Japan is to provide UWF undergraduate students the opportunity to study the Japanese language and culture and an academic discipline in the Japanese environment. The program seeks to provide a multifaceted international educational experience which will help American students better understand the Japanese people and their culture.
Award
Each student selected to participate in the Semester in Japan program will receive an award covering round-trip airfare, housing, and certain cultural excursions. Students will be responsible for tuition (9 semester hours), meals, entertainment, and personal expenses. Because of the high cost of living in Japan, students are advised to budget at least $2000 for meals, entertainment, and personal expenses.
Location
Each summer, the Summer Semester in Japan program is hosted by a college that is a member of the Jikei Technical College Group of Japan .
Recent host colleges have been the Tokyo Belle epoque College of Confectionary, the International Language Center in Tokyo, Tokyo College of Welfare, Fukuoka College of Communication Arts, and Tokyo College of Sports and Recreation.
The Jikei Technical College Group has colleges throughout Japan.
Eligibility
Degree-seeking students currently enrolled at UWF with a 2.8 GPA or higher are eligible. Preference will be given to upper level undergraduate students (juniors and seniors) with at least 1 semester of Japanese language background and participation in Japanese activities.
Curriculum
Students will be required to register for 9 semester hours of UWF credit distributed as follows:
3 s.h. Japanese Language
6 s.h two courses to be announced after selection of the instructor
In addition to formal classes, students will participate in course related field trips and local cultural events.
Students will also have the opportunity to interact with Japanese students and may have short homestays with Japanese families.
