Instruction to Authors

Authors of accepted articles from the 2002 IEMS International Conference on Industry, Engineering, and Management Systems may have their articles posted to this homepage:

http://www.uwf.edu/iems/

It is assumed that authors who send their articles to the Internet editors have the authority and desire to have their material posted.

Internet Editors

Warren Beatty (Wbeatty@uwf.edu) and Steve Zimmerman (smz9@aol.com) are the 1997-2002 Internet Editors. Dr. Beatty is an associate professor of management and Dr. Zimmerman is the Director Clinical Data Analysis of Caducian, Inc., a data analysis organization for clinical decision making. Your accepted article must be send to either one of these editors in the format and manner specified below. Please feel free to email the editors if you have any questions or problems with which you need help.

Format

Your Internet Editors do no have extensive time to edit and proof read your material for import and export errors. The ideal situation (from your point of view) is for you to prepare the hypertext file along with all graphics as *.gif files. All references from your document to graphics must use 100% lowercase names. Out system is text sensitive and only saves files using lowercase. There are a number of shareware programs that may be used for this purpose.

If you are unable to prepare your own hypertext file, we will use Microsoft Word 97 to convert it for you. We plan to use Microsoft Word 97's capability to save files as hypertext files. It is best if you send us your material in Microsoft Word. If your word processor can export to a Microsoft Word format, please do so. No matter what format you send us, we will try to import the file into Microsoft Word and will use it if we are able to do so.

Microsoft Word's capability to convert a Microsoft Word file to a hypertext file is good, but not perfect. Our homepage computer only using lowercase names. All references to graphics must be in 100% lowercase. Microsoft Word does create 100% lowercase references. We will check your document for this problem.

 Compression

Articles are generally large documents (relative to an email). When sending articles we recommend you use PKZIP to compress the files. PKZIP and PKUNZIP are shareware programs you can find on the Internet. Please check the documentation that comes with PKZIP on how to use this compressing program.

For those of you sending hypertext documents with your graphic files in *.gif format. The entire collection of files should be sent in a single ZIP file.

Email-Attached

Many email systems allow you to attach a compressed file to an email. There is no way we can help you with every email system. Usually, an careful examination of the email screen display will help you find out how to attach a file. If that does not work, a call to the system operator may be necessary.

Email-UUENCODE

A few email systems such as JUNO.COM and MCImail.com cannot handle attached files. The only option we know of for those with these types of system is to use UUENCODE/UUDECODE. These (freeware) programs will take a compress file and turn it into a (7-bit) collection of code that may be mailed by email. We have used UUENCODE and found the results satisfactory.

UUENCODE requires a fixed length line length. We have found a few systems cannot handle a long enough line, however, these systems can handle attached files so it is not an issue.

Snail Mail

If everything else fails you may mail a disk with your material to:

Warren Beatty, Ph.D.
Department of Management & MIS
College of Business
University of West Florida
Pensacola, Florida 32514

Your disk will not be returned.

Just Learning

The Internet is new. We are new to the task of being Internet Editors. With your help we will get the job done and learn as we are going along. Please be careful to proof read your articles after they are posted. We will try to correct all errors that are found. We have other jobs such as teaching our classes, doing our own research, and so on. We will try to get things done as timely as possible, but we cannot do things instantly.

Thank you for your patience. Working together we hope to have a wonderful and useful homepage.

Thanks in advance

Warren Beatty, Ph.D. and Steven Zimmerman, Ph.D.

Internet Editors, IEMS
