Course Objectives and Requirements
Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
1. Understand the historical, sociological, and cultural origins of physical
education and sport and its contribution to mankind.
2. Understand the role of physical education and sport in society and education.
3. Study philosophies of education and physical education as they relate to modem education practices.
4. To develop a personal philosophy of the role of physical education and sport in modern education.
5. Understand the objectives and principles of physical education and sport.
6. Understand the biological implications of physical education and sport.
7. Understand the sociological implications of physical education and sport.
8. Understand the psychological implications of physical education and sport.
9. Examine and understand the legal implications and responsibilities in physical education and sport.
10. Identify and discuss issues and challenges in the future of physical education and sport.
Course Requirements:
Written Quizzes and Assignments:
Periodically, there will be a written quiz on the assigned readings.
Group Project
Small groups will be assigned a theme to research from chapter 22. Groups will make presentations of their research in powerpoint format to the rest of the class.
Practicum
Each student will participate in a practicum that involve visiting an elementary, middle, and a high school physical education class. Students will be given assignments to complete following their observations.
Final Exam:
The final exam will be comprehensive requiring the students to reflect on the reading, class discussions, and assignments.
