Prepare Your Scanner

NOTE: The higher the resolution setting, the larger the file size of the document's scanned image. For example, the file size of a document scanned at 300 dpi will be over four times larger than the same document scanned at 150 dpi.
Depending on the original document that is being scanned, resolution may need to be adjusted before scanning to get the best viewing results. Refer to the Nolij Web Scanning Settings Chart for color, dpi, and file size comparisons. REMEMBER to reduce the resolution back down if you increase it for a particular document.


Before You Scan	Basic Considerations
Select the Proper Output Format	TIFF (recommended)
Select the Optimal Scanner Resolution	Nolij Corporation recommends the following Scanner dpi settings for the Nolij Web product: A minimum resolution of 200 dpi should be used when scanning documents for Nolij Web. For document types where the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature is turned on in Nolij for searchability purposes, Nolij recommends a minimum dpi of 240 and optimum of 300 be used.
Select the Optimal Compression Format	Group 4 (recommended) NOTE: Compression significantly reduces the file size of scanned documents, saving disk space and improving the speed of rendering the document image in Nolij Web.
Multipage Document Scanning	Nolij Web and other scanning software provides the capability of scanning a multipage document into one electronic file. In Nolij Web, there is a check-box that turns this feature on or off before scanning the document directly into Nolij. In various other scanning software packages, there is a similar setting that can be turned on and off as needed.

Scanner Settings Affect File Size and Image Quality

Finding the right combination of scanning settings to make a small but legible document may take some experimenting.

The scanning sample test was taken using a Fujitsu fi-5220C scanner and the ScandAll21 software that came with it.

The images look the same in the ScandAll21 software as they do in Nolij Web. File size results should be comparable with most scanners. The smaller the file size, the faster it will render in Nolij Web.

Results:

The color document sample did not scan well in B&W.
The Halftone setting produced low quality images which were hard to see in the scanner software (both Nolij Web and ScandAll21).
There is not much difference in the image quality when using Grayscale or 24bit color and changing the dots per inch.
The Grayscale documents were legible and good quality.
Nolij Web seems to have difficulty rendering the 8 Color images.
