On November 3, the University of West Florida held its sixth annual donor recognition dinner. The event, a time-honored tradition for the university, is an opportunity for UWF to thank its most valued supporters.
FIRST ARGO SCHOLAR ATTENDS UWF

Miguel Aldahondo, as a music major, is now taking classes at the University of West Florida in music theory, piano and voice lessons to name a few. Aldahondo is the first Argo Scholar to attend UWF and he hopes the scholarship will help him reach his dream of becoming a singer and a musician.

Scholarship support for UWF students from Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties has increased thanks to the generous support of the Rotary Club of Pensacola. At its Sept. 1 meeting, Club President Margaret Stopp presented two $60,000 checks, one to the University of West Florida and one to Pensacola Junior College.

Due to the generous support of friends and alumni of the University of West Florida, the UWF Foundation was able to award $25,000 in study abroad scholarships to deserving students for fall 2008 and spring 2009. Rebecca Sullivan, a UWF junior majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish, is one of 11 students who received a scholarship, which allowed her to study Spanish at the University of Costa Rica in San Pedro, Costa Rica for six weeks from April to June of this year.

LEVIN ESTATE PROVIDES ENDURING LEGACY FOR UWF STUDENTS

In memory of David Levin, a long-time Pensacola community leader and attorney, the David H. Levin Memorial Scholarship Endowment has been established within the University of West Florida Foundation, Inc. Gifted through a charitable remainder lead trust in Levin’s estate, the gift will fund need-based scholarship support for UWF students.

UWF is not a legacy school—UWF is a place that offers real opportunities to students that would not have the chance to attend college without scholarship support. It is only fitting that UWF students have a venue to express their gratitude to the numerous donors that make it possible for them to attend the university. Last month, the UWF Foundation hosted a Scholarship Appreciation Reception at the new Argonaut Athletic Club on UWF’s main campus. More than 60 donors and student scholarship recipients attended, as well as UWF President Judy Bense and Foundation Board Members Laverne Baker, Tim Haag and Brian Wyer.

A grand tradition was established in 2005 at the University of West Florida Department of Music—the Kathleen T. and Philip B. Phillips, M.D. Jazz Piano Competition. Made possible by the generosity of the Phillips family, the annual event has become a nationally recognized jazz performance competition and an opportunity for the country's best jazz pianists to showcase their talents.
FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT AT UWF

UWF serves a high proportion of first generation students who have substantial financial needs. In an effort to ease the financial burden on these students, UWF established the First Generation Scholarship in 2006. The scholarship was created in response to the state of Florida's new First Generation Matching Grant Program, which was established to help increase the number of first generation college students attending Florida's public universities. The program sets a maximum match amount for each state university every year, and in 2008/2009, UWF received its maximum match from the state of $195,000.
AMPHITHEATER NAMED AFTER RANDALL K. AND MARTHA A. HUNTER

The University of West Florida Board of Trustees recognized and honored Randall K. "Skip" and Martha Ann Hunter Dec. 12, 2008 by formally naming the Vince Whibbs Sr. Community Maritime Park amphitheater in their honor as the "Randall K. and Martha A. Hunter Amphitheater." The Hunters gifted $1 million to the University of West Florida Foundation to support the construction of the amphitheater and to support the development of the Vice Admiral John H. Fetterman State of Florida Maritime Museum and Research Center.
$35 MILLION AND COUNTING

Last September, the University of West Florida publicly launched its largest ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, Creating Great Futures, and announced its goal to raise $35 million by Dec. 31, 2010. Thanks to the generosity of UWF’s alumni and friends, that goal has been surpassed.
Johnson Scholarship Foundation Challenge Update

In March 2008, the University of West Florida announced its partnership with the Johnson Scholarship Foundation, solidifying a commitment to support need-based and First Generation scholarships for UWF students. The Johnson Scholarship Foundation has pledged $700,000, over five years, as a two-part challenge gift to support need-based scholarships at the University of West Florida, supporting both endowment building and annual scholarships. The University of West Florida is off to a great start to meeting their challenge goals.
Pensacola Young Professionals Support Maritime Museum

The Pensacola Young Professionals (PYP), a group of proactive community members, is dedicated to developing the Pensacola Bay Area as a thriving and dynamic place to live, work and play. In line with their mission, the PYP publically announced at their July 10 meeting that they are committed to help raise funds for the Maritime Museum.
UWF Baseball Field Named in Honor of Former Baseball Coach Jim Spooner

In recognition of Coach Jim Spooner’s renowned service to the University of West Florida, UWF’s baseball field has been named in his honor. Baseball alumni, friends and fans gathered at Pelican Park on Fri. Aug. 22 to celebrate the occasion and recognize Coach Spooner’s achievement.
