TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Professor M. Lal Goel I emphasize substantive learning in an environment that is intellectually challenging and non-threatening to the student. I pursue active rather than passive learning. Another objective of my teaching includes the development ideas and values.
Substantive Learning. Readings are chosen with a view to their theoretical importance and their substantive value. Written papers and oral presentations are required in all my courses. My courses are solid.
Socratic Dialog. Rather than imposing a rigidly dogmatic lecture style, I encourage Socratic dialog. Students are urged to discuss and debate issues under consideration.
Active Learning. Students experience education actively rather than passively. Active learning occurs when students are encouraged to apply the concepts and theories learned in the readings to concrete situations. Passive learning occurs when students merely regurgitate facts and figures given in the textbooks.
Ideas and Values. The purpose of college education should be "to educate the whole person." To this end, my courses seek to broaden the student's field of experience. The goal is to help the student become less narrow in his world view, less parochial in his conceptual philosophy, and less limited in his ability to develop problem solving skills. I believe higher education should be a humanizing experience.
In today's context, the objective is to make the student less local, more global. "We cannot compete in a world that we do not understand." Contemporary ecological and social problems require a global perspective..
