As the title indicates, this is a course abou= t the politics of Latin America and its Iberian progenitors.  Against a histor= ical backdrop of ruthless dictatorships and bloody revolutions, during the last two decad= es more or less democratic governments have been established or restored throughout the region.  Through novels, a biography, a standard text on Latin American politics, and other readings, we will study all these phenomena in the hope of acquiring some understanding not only of individual countries or of the region, but of politics more generally.  

 

Requirements.  You are expected to come to class = having read the material and prepared to discuss it.  The course grade will consist of f= our items, to wit:  three essays a= nd class preparation and contribution (P&C for short).  The first essay is worth 15%, the = second and third essays 30%, and P&C 25%.&nbs= p; Formats for the essays will be posted in due course. 

 

Our meetings will consist p= artly of lecture and partly of discussion.  Everyone is expected to join the discussion:  no one will be al= lowed to dominate the conversation and those holding back will be prodded to contribute their share.  What = we are looking for are thoughtful commentaries on the material assigned for the we= ek and what others say about it.  You will be assigned a weekly grade on this item based on your performance.  

 

We shall read and discuss the following books= (in whole or in part) in the order listed forthwith:

 

Mario Vargas Llosa, The Feast of the Goat

Mariano Azuela, The Underdogs

Jorge G. Castaneda, Compañero= .&nbs= p; The Life and Death of Ch&ea= cute; Guevara.

Kline a= nd Wiarda, Latin American Politics and Development.

 

Also, we wil= l also read two or three essays or book chapters on Spain and Portugal.

 

 

 

 

Integrity.

It goes without saying, but it bears repeating anywa= y, that anyone enrolled in this course makes a commitment to act with integrity.  As the home page o= f the Department of Government puts it, this means “conducting ourselves honorably, conspicuously refraining from lying or cheating about our work.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  There can be no phony excuses for failing to complete an assignment, no turning in another's work as one's ow= n, no plagiarism.”=   Anyone found to have violated this expectation is subject to being assessed a penalty up to and including being assigned an F in the course and reported to university authorities for additional action. 

 

Regarding the last-named offense, here is UWF’s plagiarism policy: “The UWF Student Handbook, Code of Student Conduct, Academic Misconduct, states: ‘Plagiarism. The act of representing the ideas, w= ords, creations or work of another as one's own.’ Plagiarism combines theft with fraud, and the penalty is correspondingly severe: failure for the assignment and, in some cases, for the entire course.  At the instructor's discretion, sh= e/he may recommend that the student be suspended from the university.  Ignorance of the rules about plagi= arism is no excuse for it, and carelessness is just as bad as purposeful violation.  Students who have plagiarized have cheated themselves out of the experience of being responsi= ble members of the academic community and have cheated their classmates by pret= ending to contribute original ideas.” (For additional information on plagiar= ism, go the UWF’s home page, click on keyword search, and enter "plagiarism policy" (in quotation marks), which allows you to download a word document several pages long.) Plagiarism will= be penalized with an "F" for the course.
