Who Should Enroll in the Online GIS Certificate Program?
- Those interested in learning both the theoretical and practical/working knowledge of an exciting, fast growing, cross-disciplinary technology field- Geographic Information Science.
- Working professionals looking to advance their career or meet current job requirements with advanced GIS skills as well as earn points towards the GISP certification - growing demands in both public and private sectors.
- New learners looking to jump-start a career in GIS or incorporate GIS analysis in current research or interests. Upon completion of the UWF GIS Certificate, students without working experience (previous or through internship) are qualified for entry-level GIS positions.
- Recent graduates or returning students who wish to acquire technical GIS skills and expertise to support current interests and knowledge. Many of our undergraduate students return to complete the GIS certificate after realizing job market demands - employers really do prefer applicants with GIS skills.
- UWF Emerald Coast Campus/Ft. Walton Beach students or prospective students wanting or needing to complete the GIS certificate to fulfill degree requirements online vs. face to face due to schedule conflicts and/or travel.
Baseline Requirements
- A computer or laptop and at least a Broadband internet connection.
- Ability to access course materials and communicate with instructors and classmates on a regular basis through email and class discussion boards.
- There are no specific prerequisites for this program, but those interested should be fairly knowledgeable about computers and the internet. Review our list of computer skills you should know for specifics.
- For those interested in taking our Graduate level GIS courses, proof of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required (upon acceptance) in order to enroll.
Recommendations
We recommend students have the following PC capabilities:
- P500+ Processor, 128MB of RAM
- Minimum screen resolution 800x600
- Internet Explorer 6 or higher; Firefox 3.0 or higher; Chrome 3.0 or higher; Safari 4.0 or higher.
- Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher
- Adobe Flash Player 10.0 or higher
- 56K minimum connection; broadband (256 kpbs or higher) connection recommended
- JavaScript, popup windows and cookies enabled
- Sound card with speakers or headphones strongly recommended
Students who are comfortable navigating the internet, exploring new software programs and troubleshooting will do well in this program.
Complete the "Getting Started with GIS (for ArcGIS10)" free training web course offered by ESRI.com.
Although there are not requirements associated with English proficency for this program, all course materials are presented in the English language. Furthermore, GIS students are required to complete course assignments utilizing the English language.
