Description of Program:
- 1-week camp for boys and girls
- Summer 2010 the students will be divided by Lower Elementary (1st-3rd grade) and Upper Elementary (4th-6th grade). This will allow us to tailor more age appropriate lessons to keep the students actively engaged.
- Build and complete projects to take home along with all their construction tools
- Learn about careers in the engineering/construction industry
- Learn about plan design, different tools (i.e. how to hammer and spackle)
- Daily lessons focusing on math (i.e. spatial design, measurements, factorials)
- During the week smaller construction activities will take place
Project for Summer 2010:
This summer both elementary groups will build birdhouses for Purple Martins.
- What are gourd birdhouses?
- Birdhouses made out of gourds
- What are gourds?
- Gourds are related to pumpkins and cucumbers
- What type of birds live in gourd houses?
- Purple Martins (see picture to the right)
- Did you know?
- Native Americans were hanging gourd houses for martins to nest before Europeans arrived in North America.
- Purple Martins eat insects during day flights just as bats eat during night flight.
- Purple Martins also get all their water during flight too.

What will you gain?
The experience will provide students with a sense of pride and self-accomplishments of building and completing projects. Students will also learn about careers in this related industry. At the end of the week, each student will have a completed project and know how to correctly use tools such as a hammer and a spackle.
