Now That the Party's Over: Rereading The Great Gatsby in Uncertain Times

The UWF Book Club and Department of English sponsored a conversation about The Great Gatsby in April . Speakers included UWF Professors Greg Tomso, David Earle, and Robin Blyn. In addition, the 1920's Theme Event included live jazz, dancing, and prizes for the most original 1920's costume. More photos can be seen in our media gallery.

 

 

Visitors Lecture Series

In the Spring semester 2009, the Department created the VISITORS LECTURE SERIES. Intended to complement the ongoing Writers in the Gallery Series, which for many years has welcomed a distinguished poet or writer of fiction onto campus each semester to read from his or her work, and discuss the craft of making art with words, the VISTORS LECTURE SERIES brought distinguished scholars and literary critics to UWF to present a formal lecture, open to the public, and conduct a graduate and/or undergraduate class. Mi Barrio / My Neighborhood

“Mi Barrio” is a university wide event created by Spanish instructor Laura Arguea to practice the language beyond the classroom setting. "Mi Barrio" is the Spanish translation of My Neighborhood.The first “Mi Barrio” was held in the Spring 2006, and since then, “Mi Barrio” has been offering a variety of language and culture activities, organized by students, faculty, and staff. Old English Students Perform "Beowulf"

Professor Robert Yeager and 25 students from his Introduction to Old English Course read "Beowulf" in November, 2008. All 3,182 lines were performed in the original Old English Language. For more photos, please see the media gallery.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Spanish Immersion Room

The Department of English and Foreign Languages contributed to UWF's observance of International Education Week by hosting the Spanish Immersion Room. The event was held in the UWF Commons on November 17, 2008. Laura Arguea, Spanish Instructor, organized the various displays as well as an open area showcasing tango dance and music. Spanish students helped Mrs. Arguea lead the activites which included versions of Bingo and Spanish Simon Says. The volunteers and attendees enjoyed this terrific learning experience.

 

Was Richard II Really a Tyrant?

In October 2007, Terry Jones, scholar of medieval literature, film-writer, actor, director and founding member of Monty Python’s Flying Circus made his second visit from London to lecture, give workshops and spend time with students.This event was absolutely a highlight of the fall term.
