Why Choose English?
The study of literature provides an outstanding opportunity to cultivate the life of the mind, perhaps the most rewarding of all human pursuits. Reading and analyzing literature teaches us to think critically and deliberately, never shying away from difficult or controversial topics. In addition, literature challenges us to grow as individuals as we re-consider the meaning and direction of our relationships with others. More than any other aspect of our culture, literature both re-affirms and questions our most cherished beliefs. Thus, as English majors, we come to understand that one does not ever master the study of literature, but rather learns the value of learning itself.
The University of West Florida’s Department of English and World Languages promotes active student learning through a rigorous program that emphasizes historical breadth, skills development, and diversity. From single-author seminars to lectures in literary theory, our classes provide students ample opportunity to pursue their individual interests while receiving guidance from a dedicated, internationally-recognized faculty.
English majors are in demand in today’s global marketplace, where critical thinking and writing skills are more important than ever. While employers can offer technical or job-specific training to new employees, they can’t teach the fundamentals of strong thinking and writing, the stock-in-trade of English majors. English majors are attractive hires because they are good communicators who easily succeed in fast-paced and increasingly diverse professional settings.
