Media Alert FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Nov. 22, 2011 Media Contact - Lauren Haggett Phone: 850-857-6109 E-mail: lhaggett@uwf.edu UWF to host robotics competition for local middle-schoolers Dec. 3 What: FIRST ® LEGO® League (FLL®) "Food Factor®" Challenge When: Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 Where: UWF Fort Walton Beach Campus (UWF/NWFSC Campus) 1170 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Fort Walton Beach Why: The University of West Florida is hosting the FIRST ® LEGO® League (FLL®) "Food Factor®" Challenge on Dec. 3. Area children, ages 9-14, will participate in the robotics competition. Every year, FLL® releases a challenge based on a real-world scientific topic. Each challenge has two parts: the Robot Game and the Project. This year's topic is "Food Factor®" Challenge. To successfully complete the Challenge, teams of young people must conduct research and build and program a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robot to explore the ways in which food can become contaminated - exposure, insects and creatures, unsterile processing and transportation, unsanitary preparation and unsafe storage. Then teams propose real-world solutions for preventing or combating these contaminants. Opening ceremony will be at 8:30 a.m. and closing ceremony will be at 3 p.m. Both ceremonies will be held in the Auditorium (Bldg. 8) of UWF/NWFSC Campus, 1170 MLK Jr. Blvd., Fort Walton Beach. Come watch as custom-built robots come to life in fast-paced, timed competitions. For more information, call Ester Molder at 850-863-6575, or email emolder@uwf.edu. |
