Student Internship/Student Teaching/Service-Learning Information
The Criminal Justice Internship is a cooperative effort between the criminal justice program at the University of West Florida and public or private criminal justice agencies. The purpose of the internship is to give students the opportunity to apply their education to actual work situations. The student works under the supervision of the criminal justice professional . To earn 3 semester hours of credit, the student works approximately 200 hours with the agency.
Up to 6 semester hours of internship can be used to meet degree requirements.
Some placements include: Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, Victim Assistance Center, Shelter House, Office of Juvenile Studies - Advanced Aftercare, Emerald Coast Marine Institute, Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office, Okaloosa Regional Detention Center, State's Attorneys Office, Juvenile Probation, Medical Examiner's Office
To be eligible, students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the Criminal Justice major and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 as calculated by UWF; and, 3) successfully completed at least 12 hours in criminal justice courses (9 hours from core). There are also several factors considered by the Intern Coordinator in determining whether a student qualifies for a particular internship opportunity. Those factors include, but are not limited to: 1) the number and type criminal justice-related courses completed before the semester the internship is scheduled; 2) the nature of the internship; and 3) perceived ability of student to successfully complete the internship.

Michael Wilder
BA Criminal Justice, 2001 & MPA, 2003
“I am currently a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper stationed in the Tampa area. I’ve been with FHP for over 3 years. I lived in the FWB area for over ten years working a number of different jobs and going to school. I was fortunate to get a job with the University at the FWB campus. It started out as part time and eventually became full time. I knew it was time to finish my degree and UWF made that happen.
While I was attending UWF, I served as an auxiliary member of the FHP and worked full time for the University. If it had not been for the criminal justice program being offered in FWB, I don’t know if I would have been able to pursue my dream of being in law enforcement. Because the classes were offered locally, I was able to work and complete my degree. After I finished my bachelor’s degree, I took the opportunity to earn an MPA from UWF. I knew that education would be important for me to be able to promote within law enforcement. Because most of the graduate program classes were offered in FWB, I was able to earn my degree without the time and expense of traveling to Pensacola on a regular basis.”
