Master of Arts in Exceptional Student Education & Mathematics for Teachers

 

This program is comprehensive and designed to develop master teachers who are prepared for the instructional and leadership roles in teacher education in the field of mathematics.  Students in the master’s degree program have 6 semester hours of required core courses in Education.  There are 30 semester hours in Mathematics. This 36 semester hour program includes the following courses:

 


·         Foundations of Professional Education

·         Foundations of Exceptional Student Education

·         Teaching Discrete Math Concepts in Secondary Education

·         Teaching Geometry in Secondary Education

·         Teaching Algebra Concepts in Secondary Education

·         Teaching Trigonometry Concepts in Secondary Education

·         Teaching Statistics Concepts in Secondary Education

·         Teaching Calculus Concepts in Secondary Education I

·         Teaching Calculus Concepts in Secondary Education II

·         Teaching Methods in Secondary Education (includes practical experience as needed)

·         Proportional Reasoning

·         Mathematics for the 21st Century

·         Student Teaching (optional)


 

As a student in this program, you will learn math content and methods of how to teach mathematics to regular, at-risk, included, and ESE students.  Courses integrate “cutting-edge” technology and focus on developing the positive self-worth of every individual. You will participate in a sequence of school-based observations and teaching experiences designed to hone skills in working as a member of an instructional team, and planning and managing instruction. You will also learn techniques for introduction of diversity in the classroom.

 

Representative Careers

Graduates of the Comprehensive ESE/Mathematics Education program will be prepared to pass the Professional, ESE, and Secondary Mathematics Florida Teacher Certification Exams. Graduates will be eligible for certification in Florida to teach mathematics in regular classrooms, public school special education classes for ESE students (6-12), private schools for children with exceptional student education needs, mental health centers, public correction facilities, and rehabilitation centers such as Florida HRS and Eckerd Camps.  Graduates are also eligible for certification in 27 other states that have reciprocal agreements with Florida.

 

Accreditation

The University of West Florida is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).  In addition, graduate programs are reviewed and/or approved by the Florida Department of Education.
