Mission Statement:
The Mission of Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity is to promote and support excellence in music and musicianship.
Purpose:
to create and foster fellowship through music;
to give music students an opportunity to meet with one another and, by personal contact and exchange of ideas, to broaden the individual outlook;
to strengthen a devotion and loyalty to Alma Mater;
to develop character and leadership;
to encourage the highest possible scholastic attainment, excellence of individual performance; and appreciation of good music
to give material aid to worthy students;
to manifest interest in young musicians.
Objectives:
to promote American music and musicians;
to further the work of composers;
to stimulate appreciation of good music at the community level;
to advance high ethical standards of professional conduct in the musical world;
to encourage understanding of the cultures of all nations;
to do any and all things conductive to the service, betterment and ultimate welfare of musicians.
Bylaws
I. Membership Qualifications
Section 1: Membership
A. Eligibility
1. Declared Music Major or minor
2. Completed at least one semester of college classes
3. Completed at least one semester of music theory
4. 3.0 GPA in music in preceding semester
5. 2.5 GPA in all other courses in preceding semester
B. Election to membership
1. Candidate shall request membership by submitting a completed application
2. Candidate shall appear before the Chapter at which time will be asked individually:
a. What influenced you to major or minor in music?
b. What are your future plans regarding music?
c. Which areas of music do you prefer and why?
d. What do you expect to gain from Delta Omicron?
e. How can you, as a member of Delta Omicron, further the cause of music in the world?
3. Chapter shall conform or reject each applicant by a ¾ majority. Reasons should be offered for negative votes. Percentage of membership shall be at least 80% of the total membership.
4. Bids shall be extended by the secretary following interviews.
5. Each applicant must respond in writing to the First Vice President within 24 hours of receiving bid.
C. Membership Withdrawal
1. The member must present a letter to the officers stating reason for requesting withdrawal.
2. The officers, along with the Chapter Advisor, will then meet to discuss and vote on what status to grant the petitioning member.
Section 2: Pledge Period
A. Applicants shall be accepted one time in each fall and spring semesters.
B. Pledge period should not exceed 8 weeks.
C. Initiation dates shall be left to the discretion of the chapter.
D. Activities of pledging may include, but are not limited to:
a. Pledge ceremony
b. Formal musicale
c. Fraternity knowledge exam
d. Initiation ceremony
E. Wearing the pledge pin
1. Wear it over your heart only.
2. Wear it over the left of a social fraternity or other badge.
3. Never wear it lower than another badge.
4. Wear it proudly and happily.
5. Never wear it as a jacket lapel pin.
6. Never wear it with very casual clothing such as cut-off’s, tank-tops, etc.
Section 3: Active members
A. Officers shall be:
1. President (Scholarship chair)
2. First Vice President (Pledge/Rush chair)
3. Second Vice President (Alumni chair)
4. Secretary
5. Treasurer
6. Music Advisor
7. Historian
8. Publicity Director
9. Chaplain
10. Warden
11. Accompanist/ Pianist(appointed by President)
B. Eligibility
1. Members shall have maintained a 3.0 in music courses.
2. Members shall have maintained a 2.5 in other courses.
3. Members must be in good standing with Gamma Upsilon chapter of Delta Omicron in order to hold office.
C. Removal of Member from Officer position
1. Removal of an officer from title and responsibilities must be approved by a ¾ majority vote or 80% of membership.
2. Removal must be based on:
a. Lack of interest in position
b. Request by that officer
c. Officer is not fulfilling responsibilities and duties required of the position and title.
d. A warning will be given prior to action and removal to give opportunity to correct the situation.
D. Executive Council Shall Consist of
a. President
b. 1st Vice President
c. 2nd Vice President
d. Secretary
e. Treasurer
II. Meetings
A. Quorum must be present.
a. Quorum shall consist of at least 2 members of the executive council and 3 other members at a set, publicized, meeting time. A majority must agree for a decision to be reached.
B. Gamma Upsilon shall hold a total of three meetings monthly.
1. The chapter officers are required, but not limited to, meet once monthly.
2. The chapter members are required to meet once monthly.
3. A musicale shall be held once a month.
a. An open, public musicale should be held once each semester.
b. Any other musicales will be determined, by the chapter, opened or closed.
C. All meetings, musicales, pledge activities, and all functions as called by the Executive Council are required to be attended by members of the chapter.
D. Excusal from activities will be handled on an individual basis according to need, priority or emergency.
1. If absence occurs, member must submit a written request to the board for approval. If denied, a member must pay the applicable fine.
E. Dues
1. Chapter dues paid per semester are $15.00
2. National dues paid once each fall are $30.00
F. Fines
1. $5 for unexcused absences at regular meetings
2. $1.50 for unexcused absences to musicales
3. $5 for unexcused absences to initiation ceremonies
4. $.01 charge per minute for tardiness.
5. $1 for inappropriate dress at meetings and other events

V. Warranties
a. Gamma Upsilon’s purpose and activities are lawful
b. Gamma Upsilon does not discriminate in the membership practices on basis of sex and its membership of open to all regardless to race, creed, color, national origin, maritial status, or handicap.
c. Gamma Upsilon agrees to abide by the Universities policy of hazing.
