Sexual Assault Awareness Week occurs annually in April and aims to increase the public’s understanding about sexual violence in our society. This effort can help communities support rape and sexual assault survivors, and their families, as well as the individuals and agencies that provide rape crisis intervention and prevention services throughout the year.
Take Back the Night is an international event intended to educate, protest, and bring awareness on ending violence against women. Throughout its history, TBTN has inspired both women and men to confront a myriad of social ills, including rape, sexual violence, domestic violence, violence against children, and violence against women. The unifying theme throughout these diverse topics is the assertion that all human beings have the right to be free from violence, the right to be heard, and the right to reclaim those rights if they are violated. This year the event will be held on April 4th at 5:30.
Clothesline Project- This is sponsored by the student group, Break the Silence. They provide blank t-shirts and encourage students and staff to make a shirt about how sexual assault has affected them or someone they care about. Hundreds of these shirts are hung around the Cannon Greens and create a haunting visual experience. The shirts provide messages about the effects of sexual assault, survival, and the common desire to remove sexual assault and its effects from our culture and world.
Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) Demonstration- R.A.D. is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.
A teal ribbon is the international symbol for sexual assault awareness. Our UWF Sexual Assault Program developed the Teal Ribbon campaign to raise awareness about the issue in hope of reducing sexual violence on our campus. Teal ribbons were placed at the entrance of campus to represent the national statistic that 1 in 4 college women will be the victim or attempted victim of sexual assault at some point during their college career. You may have also seen teal ribbons tied to trees around campus as well.
