Individual Counseling

Individual counseling (also called individual therapy) provides you with the opportunity to meet one-to-one with a therapist in order to collaboratively address concerns that you feel are interfering with your life.  The goal of a therapist is generally not to tell you what to do, but to provide an empathic, non-judgmental environment that allows you to explore the options that may be available to you in order to help you to address your concerns.  Therapists may sometimes use inquiry to help you to make sense of your concerns, may use psycho-education in order to provide you with other ways of viewing a circumstance, and will always provide active listening in order to give you the opportunity to feel heard and understood, and to then better understand yourself.

In order to schedule a counseling appointment call Counseling and Wellness Services at 474-2420 or stop by the center, located in Building 19 West..   The office staff will schedule you with the next available appointment. Counseling services are free for students and sessions generally last 45-50 minutes.

If you feel like you are experiencing an emergency, please inform the office staff so that the center can get you the help that you may need.  Examples of an emergency include the recent experience of sexual assault, the recent death of a significant person in your life, or thoughts about harming yourself or someone else.

What Are Some Common Concerns That Students Talk About In Counseling?

Students talk about many different concerns in counseling that can range from concern about getting along with a roommate to concern about addressing symptoms of bipolar disorder.  It is not possible to identify all of the different types of concerns that students address in counseling, but the following list provides a general sample of issues addressed:  Anger management, anxiety, career goal uncertainty, depression, domestic violence, eating disorder, gender identity concerns, grief, history of sexual abuse, loneliness, romantic relationship concerns, substance abuse issues, suicidal thoughts, family relational difficulties, and uncertainty about sexual orientation.

What Do Students Generally Say About the Counseling Services They Receive?

While it can be difficult sometimes to ensure that every student is offered an evaluation form to complete regarding their counseling services, Counseling and Wellness Services does make an effort to offer students the opportunity to complete an evaluation in a scheduled manner.  The overall responses that we have received indicate that students are very happy with the counseling services that they receive and students often indicate that they would refer our services to a friend.
