Message from the Dean
Welcome to the spring edition of the College of Professional Studies Alumni Newsletter. We continue to be very busy this spring, and are on track to exceed last year's record-setting enrollment this coming fall at UWF. As we grow and expand, we are constantly creating new opportunities for our students through new curriculum, new offerings, and new technology here at the college.
In this edition, we highlight our alumni and faculty Fulbright winners; the third annual Domestic Violence Training conference for area professionals and COPS students; the opening of National Flight Academy facilities at the Naval Air Station and here at the UWF main campus; the establishment of the Criminal Justice Endowed Scholarship in Diversity; and the celebration of the many successes of our alumni, students, and faculty at the 2012 COPS Alumni Social. This past semester also saw the culmination of years of hard work by our Professional Education Unit in the awarding of full accreditation by National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Have a wonderful summer!
Dr. Pam Northrup
Alumni Spotlight: Bessie Reina
Bessie Reina earned her BA in International Studies, Political Science/Pre-Law from UWF in December of 2007. She continued at UWF and earned her MSA in Public Administration in August of 2010.
In March of 2012, Reina was notified that she had been selected for a US Student Fulbright award for research in Bulgaria.
Dr. William Evans Awarded Fulbright for International Study
Dr. Bill Evans, Director of the School of Education, recently completed a Fulbright scholarship that included a six-week visit to the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. He was awarded the Fulbright after a rigorous application process that took several years. While in New Zealand this spring, Dr. Evans worked with teacher education faculty there at the University of Canterbury and at Massey University on program development and policy implementation.
While there are many similarities between the public school systems in the U.S. and in New Zealand, he noted that the biggest difference is that New Zealand is still working on how best to address the needs of students in the lowest quartile in the public schools.
Justice Studies Hosts Domestic Violence Conference
The UWF Department of Justice Studies and the Escambia County Domestic Violence Coalition partnered to present "The Professional's Challenge in Addressing Domestic Violence," a two-day conference for law enforcement, prosecutors, probation officers, victim advocates, social workers, and students on April 9 and 10, 2012.
This year's event, held during National Child Abuse Prevention Month in the UWF Conference Center, featured presentations from a variety of professionals and offered training on best practices addressing domestic violence. This is the third year that UWF has hosted the event.
Student Spotlight: Michael Gilbert
Michael Gilbert is recently retired from the United States Air Force, but you won’t find him relaxing and enjoying life in the slow lane here in Pensacola. Instead, he has returned to academics at the College of Professional Studies (COPS) at UWF to complete the education he started 28 years ago at the University of Southern Nevada.
After completing a thirty-year career in the Air Force, Gilbert enrolled at UWF as a junior in the summer of 2011. He is currently slated to graduate this summer, and was recently named the 2012 College of Professional Studies Outstanding Undergraduate Student for Legal Studies. Gilbert will start law school at Louisiana State University in the fall.[Read more...]
COPS 2012 Alumni Social
Alumni, friends, faculty, and staff all had a great time at the 2012 College of Professional Studies (COPS) Alumni Social, held the evening of Thursday, May 3 in the UWF Conference Center. The standing-room only event was well-attended, as COPS recognized the amazing accomplishments that came to fruition during the preceding year, both inside the college by faculty and outside the college by our outstanding alumni and community partners.
The real stars of the event were the Outstanding Alumni awardees, who were given awards and recognized for their contributions to the community, to their fields, and to the mutually beneficial partnerships they have fostered and maintained.
Keep in Touch with COPS!

NFA Now Open at UWF and NAS
The National Flight Academy (NFA) now has two immersive, game-based learning facilities in Pensacola, thanks in no small part to the tireless efforts of our own Dean Northrup.
The Ambition, the first fully-immersive learning lab in the country boasting 100,000 square feet of technology, celebrated its grand opening at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola on Friday May 11, 2012. It features a galley with catered food, bunks, lockers, work desks and other amenities available on an actual ship.
On March 8, 2012 the UWF College of Professional Studies christened the USS Argo, a Super Aviation Classroom Experience and the first classroom of its kind on a college campus. Aspiring teachers will will use the classroom to provide new, technology-driven learning experiences to help students develop critical thinking and decision-making skills in a variety of STEM disciplines.
