Last Week's Lesson | Next Week's Lesson

What We Did Last Week

In Project 1, you learned about databases and database management systems. You learned how to create a database and how to create the tables within a database. You saw how to define the fields in a table by specifying the characteristics of the fields. You learned how to open a table, how to add records to it, and how to close it. You also printed the contents of a table. You created a form to view data on the screen and also created a custom report. You learned how to use Microsoft Access Help. Finally, you learned how to design a database to eliminate redundancy.

In Project 2, you created and ran a variety of queries. You saw how to select fields in a query. You used text data and wildcards in criteria. You also used comparison operators in criteria involving numeric data. You combined criteria with both AND and OR. You saw how to sort the results of a query, how to join tables, and how to restrict the records in a join. You created computed fields and calculated statistics. You learned how to use grouping as well as how to save a query for future use.

In Project 3, you learned how to maintain a database. You saw how to use Form view to add records to a table. You learned how to locate and filter records. You saw how to change the contents of records in a table and how to delete records from a table. You restructured a table, both by changing field characteristics and by adding a new field. You saw how to make changes to groups of records and how to delete groups of records. You learned how to create a variety of validation rules to specify a required field, specify a range, specify a default value, specify legal values, and specify a format. You examined the issues involved in updating a table with validation rules. You also saw how to specify referential integrity. You learned how to view related data by using subdatasheets. You learned how to order records. Finally, you saw how to improve performance by creating single-field and multiple-field indexes.

Test #4 is scheduled on Tuesday/Thursday at 6 p. m. in Room 2146. You can also take the test at any one of the PJC test centers during the week from Monday to Thursday during their testing hours. Make sure to call ahead and make an appointment. Tuesday/Thursday night test is set up for people who work during the day and can't go to the test center.

Please do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions.

What You Will Learn This Week

Project 1 introduces you to starting PowerPoint and creating a presentation consisting of a title slide and single- and multi-level bulleted lists. You will learn about PowerPoint design templates, objects, and attributes. This project illustrates how to create an interesting introduction to a presentation by changing the text font style to italic and increasing font size on the title slide. Completing these tasks, you will save the presentation. Then, you will create three text slides with bulleted list, two with multi-level bullets, to explain how to meet friends in college. Next you will learn how to view the presentation in slide show view. Then, you will learn how to quit PowerPoint and how to open an existing presentation. You will use the Spelling checker to search for spelling errors. You will learn how to display the presentation in black and white. You will learn how to print hard copies of the slides in order to make handouts and overhead transparencies. Finally, you will learn how to use the PowerPoint Help system.

Project 2 introduces you to the Outline tab, clip art, and animation effects.  You will create a slide presentation on the Outline tab where you will enter all the text in the form of an outline.  You will arrange the text using the Promote and Demote buttons. Once the outline is complete, you will change slide layouts and add clip art.

After adding clip art to slides without using a content placeholder, you will move and size the clips.  You will add preset animation effects and apply animation effects to a clip. You will learn how to run an animated slide show demonstrating slide transition and animation effects.  Then, you will print the presentation outline and slides using the Print command on the File menu and e-mail the presentation.
