Critical Reading
Throughout the course of the program, students are given various
outside reading assignments from both fiction and non-fiction books
that are supplied by the program. In this program, textbooks are emphasized
less and concepts emphasized more. To be able to conceptualize at this
age, students need a better frame of reference, thus the breadth of
reading. Instead of book reports which can be lacking in depth, each
chapter is quized and discussion follows which requries the student
to think critically about what they have read and see it from a different
angle. Too often these days, students can read mechanically for content
and symbolism, but they cannot critically analyze the larger picture
and gain implications from what they have read. This is the base of
the program.
