Our department currently offers two Bachelor of Science degrees accredited by the American Chemical Society: the B.S. in Chemistry and a B.S. in Chemistry with a Biochemistry specialization. These degrees are designed to prepare students for a career in chemistry or graduate work in many of the sciences, e.g. Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Medicinal or Pharmaceutical chemistry.
Our graduates have gone on to be successful at many graduate schools (University of California, Irvine Oxford University, Florida State University, and Georgia Tech just to name a few) and successful careers as scientists with many of the major technically based companies such as, DOW, GSK, Proctor and Gamble and Merck. Others have become successful entrepreneurs.
The B.A. program is designed for students that are interested in pursuing careers in science related fields, but may not be a practicing chemist. This program provides students with a strong background in chemistry (24 credits of upper division chemistry credits), but allows the flexibility to gain experience in other areas (business, biology, education, etc). The B.A. tracks allow students greater flexibility in their choice of courses and careers.
There are 10 Bachelor of Arts tracks in Chemistry, with the following specializations:
The Chemistry Department has compiled a list recommended degree plans (both BA and BS) for the many of the career options available for chemistry students. We hope this will aid prospective students in choosing the appropriate degree for the desired career ambitions.
