Kristina Behan, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, published "Teaching Research Design and Practice One Bite at a Time in the MT/CLS Curriculum" in the October issue of "LabMedicine."
Lynne Lauderdale, Music, was selected to perform on the College and Independent Teachers Recital at the Florida State Music Teachers Annual Conference held Oct. 19 in Boca Raton. She will represent UWF and District 1 of the Florida State Music Teachers Association, which is affiliated with the Music Teachers National Association.
Debra Vinci and Melissa Howard, Health, Leisure and Exercise Science, and Robert Philen, Anthropology, were invited to present the following research at the Symposium on Addictive and Health Behaviors Research at Amelia Island Sept. 24 and 25. Philen and Vinci presented "Analysis of students' cultural models of drinking and related contexts and activities." Howard presented "Diversion of prescription drugs for non-medical use among high school seniors." The conference is sponsored by the University of Florida Addictive and Health Behaviors Research Institute in partnership with the American Academy of Health Behavior.
Rose Printing Company received an Award of Excellence for the printing of the UWF Archaeology book, "Unearthing Pensacola." The 20th Annual Florida Print Awards competition attracted ore than 1,000 entries from more than 400 printers in the state. The book was written with Judy Bense and designed by Nancy Miller. "Unearthing Pensacola" is a companion book to the WUWF Public Radio program hosted by Bense and Sandra Averhart.
Valerie George, Art, was selected to receive a Scholarly and Creative Activity Faculty award of $2,000.00.
Ed Rodgers, Computer Science, was awarded $2,068 from the Mikkeli Polytechnic School of Business to teach an online course titled “Data Security in eBusiness." Mikkeli Polytechnic is an important part of Finland's higher education system. Polytechnics are institutes of high-level post-secondary education based on the needs of working life. Mikkeli Polytechnic's mission is to provide the highest professional expertise as well as applied research and development work for the needs of the working life. Mikkeli Polytechnic has also been active in developing opportunities for student exchange, international projects and research.
Steve Vodanovich, Psychology and Chris Piotrowski had their article, "Workaholism and Work-Family Conflict: a review and conceptual framework," published in the recent issue of the Organization Development Journal.
Jonathon Fink, English, has been awarded a $20,000.00 fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts to support his writing.
Michael Coleman, Music, recently had an original work, "Fragments," performed by cellist Craig Hultgren on the Birmingham Art Music Alliance concert series on Sept. 28. His piano work, "Two Bagatelles," is on a new CD release by pianist Jeri-Mae Astolfi Capstone Records. The CD is titled "Sonance: New Music for Piano" and will be available this fall. Astolfi also performed these works on Pensacola Junior College's Lyceum Series (Sept. 5) and on the Society of Composer's national conference in San Antonio (Sept. 15). Coleman will also be an adjudicator for the Alabama Music Teacher's Association composition competition
Venkat Sharma, Biology, will be included in “Marquis Who's Who in America, 2007." The new 2007 edition features 110,000 of the nation's top achievers in all fields of endeavor, from business and politics, to health care and science, to the arts and entertainment.
Sharma also recently had an article he co-authored accepted for publication in the British Society for Immunology journal, ?Clinical and Experimental Immunology.? The article is titled “Juxtacrine function of interleukin-15/interleukin-15 receptor system in tumour derived human B-cell lines.?
In addition, Sharma will be a member of a panel at the "Workshop on Bioethics, Hindu and Buddhist Perspectives" to be held in Orlando Nov. 3. Brochure is attached. The discussion will include the following topics: "Shaping Bioethics in the Age of Clashing Cultures," "Palliative Care and Physician Assisted Suicides" and "Stem Cell Research, Abortion, Cloning and Aging."
Alberto Hernandez, University Libraries, and Joseph Rawlins, emeritus professor, Music, have been notified that their co-authored article, "Federico Mompou: Catalonian Composer Magnifico," will be published in the December 2006- January 2007 volume of the American Music Teacher, the official publication of the Music Teachers National Association. The article is dedicated to Pierre Huybregts, deceased professor of Music, and Rawlins' colleague for more than 25 years, during which time the two concretized extensively and presented numerous recitals together.
Rawlins also has two other articles accepted for publication. The first, "Charles Wilfred Orr (1893-1976): An English Craftsman Revisited," will be published by the Journal of Singing, the official publication of both the American and Canadian National Associations of Teachers of Singing. The second is "Reynaldo Hahn, le Venezuelien Musicien de Paris," accepted by the editorial board of the same journal. The Hahn article incorporates into the text many poetic translations of French poetry by Pierre Kaufke, professor of English and Foreign Languages.
