Choosing your major can be challenging and even scary, but realize that you are not alone in making a decision about which major is best for you. Keep in mind that your choice of major does not determine your career path. Just like students change majors, graduates change careers. In fact, many people change careers several times over the course of their lives. At Career Services, we advocate using some of the following approaches to help you determine what major might be best for you:
- Identify your VIPS
- Values
- What are your priorities?
- What elements of your life do you want to remain in place for the future?
- Interests
- What do you enjoy doing?
- How do you like to spend your time?
- Personality
- What characteristics would you say describe you?
- How would your friends describe you?
- Skills
- What do you excel in?
- What things have you noticed that you are naturally more gifted in compared to your peers?
- Visit www.myplan.com or meet with your academic advisor to learn about different careers and majors
- Choose to volunteer in order to explore your career-related interests through participation that doesn’t require a great deal of time or commitment
- Consider drafting a few career-related goals using the SMART technique. You always want your goals to be:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Realistic
- Timely
